Disclaimer

All information on this website, including but not limited to downloadable documents, forms, and all blog post content (“the Toolkit”) consists of general recommendations for deaccessioning and disposal written by Jessica Bellingham (“the Author”), intended for use by anyone completing a deaccessioning project (“the User”), namely museum professionals. Note that this is an independent work, and does not necessarily reflect the views or official positions of any past, present, or future employer of the Author.

The Toolkit has been written based on currently available collections management literature as well as experience with deaccessioning. It is meant to serve as a guide for completing a deaccessioning and/or disposal project. Note that disposal types and exact procedures will vary based on the properties of each deaccessioned item and the institution to which it belongs. This toolkit may not apply to every type of object or method of disposal. The Author suggests reading through the entire toolkit before beginning a deaccessioning project.

The Toolkit does not address any issues surrounding culturally or environmentally sensitive material, including but not limited to: objects that fall under the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA), or any other cultural property or environmental resource protection laws. Always follow local, state, and federal laws, and seek legal counsel when deaccessioning and disposing of objects.

In accordance with the above information, any breach of law or ethics that occurs as a result of using this toolkit is the responsibility of the User. Use of this toolkit constitutes an agreement by the User to fully hold the Author harmless from and against any and all claims, demands, suits, losses, damages, costs, or expenses arising out of the User’s application of the Toolkit.

Please feel free to share this website with colleagues and friends. However, the Toolkit is the intellectual property of the Author. The Toolkit must be cited to meet academic standards in any publication or other format where information from the Toolkit is shared.

The Toolkit and its contents must not be presented at any conference or professional organization except by the Author. The Toolkit may not be published on any other website without express written consent of the Author.

Contact information for the Author can be found on the “About” page of this website.

Some sections of this toolkit were loosely modeled on the Disposal Toolkit published by the UK Museums Association. For a complete list of references and resources, see Appendix II of the Toolkit.
